What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared, non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment for signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, on the chin, brow, neck, and upper chest. It delivers microfocused ultrasound energy to the deeper skin layers where it stimulates the body to produce more collagen, an essential skin protein. With increased collagen production, new and healthier cells grow and replace the dead skin cells, resulting in younger-looking skin.

How Ultherapy Works

Nurse Kelly | Ultherapy

Ultherapy employs microfocused ultrasound energy to treat different skin concerns. It delivers ultrasound energy to the deeper skin layers to heat the skin tissue in a controlled manner. This process stimulates the production of new collagen. Since the main role of collagen is to provide structural support to the skin tissues, the treated area becomes tighter, smoother, and more rejuvenated. In addition, increased collagen production also allows new cells to grow and replace dead skin cells. This process is known as skin cell turnover and is the holy grail of healthy skin because it makes the skin more firm and eliminates fine lines and wrinkles more quickly and effectively.

Advantages of Ultherapy

Ultherapy Grand Cayman offers the following advantages:

  • Shorter recovery time: The procedure is non-invasive and does not require surgery, allowing you to return to your normal routine afterwards.
  • Minimal discomfort: The treatment causes a warm sensation but a numbing cream will be applied to the target skin area to minimize discomfort.
  • Quick procedure: Depending on the condition being treated, the entire process usually takes between 30 and 90 minutes to complete.
  • Numerous indications: Its state-of-the-art microfocused ultrasound energy can treat fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity.
  • Compatible with all skin types: The treatment produces uniform results for all skin types and tones.
  • High level of safety: The microfocused ultrasound energy is specifically delivered to the deeper skin layers without causing damage or injury to the surrounding skin tissue.

What to Expect before Ultherapy

Nurse Kelly | Ultherapy

Before the treatment, Nurse Kelly will provide specific instructions to ensure the best clinical outcomes. These include the following:

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure or sun tanning.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Avoid taking blood-thinning medications, supplements, or herbs.
  • Avoid waxing or depilatories.
  • Do not use makeup and other skin care products on the target area before the treatment.
  • Shave excess hair.

What to Expect during Ultherapy

During the procedure, the practitioner will place you in a comfortable reclining position. To minimise discomfort during the treatment, a chilling machine will blow cold air onto the treatment area and patient can use stress balls and vibrating tools as distractions. Our clinic also offers Pro-Not (laughing gas) for pain management.  The practitioner will use a handheld transducer to deliver the ultrasound energy to the deeper layers of the skin. You may experience a warm sensation beneath the skin surface but this is usually tolerable.

Ultherapy Recovery Time

When the treatment is over, you will be allowed to go home since it requires little to no downtime. You may experience some redness and bruising in the treated area but they can be easily managed by applying ice packs. These side effects will usually go away after one to two days. For best results and to determine if additional treatments are necessary, you will need to follow up with Nurse Kelly.

Conditions Treated by Ultherapy

The skin-tightening effects of Ultherapy can be attributed to its ability to stimulate increased collagen production. Studies show that Ultherapy’s revolutionary ultrasound technology can help address signs of aging in the different body parts.

Facial Lines and Wrinkles

Facial lines and wrinkles are caused by the age-related decline in the production of collagen. Ultherapy’s microfocused ultrasound stimulates the production of collagen. This essential protein enhances the moisture content of the outermost layer of the skin and improves skin elasticity. As a result, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is significantly reduced.

A review of several studies online evaluated the role and efficiency of using microfocused ultrasound therapy in male and female patients aged 35-65. [1] Results revealed that microfocused ultrasound therapy was associated with significant improvements in the overall aesthetics of sagging of the mid and lower face. In addition, most patients reported no adverse side effects and the results were long-lasting.

Fifty adult patients with mid-face and lower-face sagging underwent treatment with Intense focused ultrasound known as the Ulthera System. [2] The patients had photographs taken before and after the treatment and were instructed to fill out a self-assessment questionnaire. At the end of 6 months, 93% of the patients reported improvements in mid-face and lower-face sagging and 85% of the patients reported that the results were satisfactory. Improvements in mid-face and lower-face sagging continued for up to 1 year after the treatment.

Nine women aged 38-64 years with static periorbital wrinkles (lines around the eyes), perioral wrinkles (lines around the mouth), or accordion lines (curved vertical lines outside the corners of the mouth) had a single microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V, Ultherapy) treatment. [3] After 180 days, single-depth MFU-V treatment produced aesthetic improvements in periorbital wrinkles, perioral wrinkles, and accordion lines. All of the subjects experienced mild skin redness at the treatment site which was well tolerated.

Treatment Options

Ultherapy can significantly reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles by increasing collagen production.

Neck Wrinkles

Neck lines and wrinkles also result from age-related collagen depletion. As the skin loses its elasticity, signs of neck aging become more prominent. Ultherapy’s microfocused ultrasound technology stimulates collagen production which in turn helps tighten the skin in the neck area, thus reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

A total of 158 patients received four weekly sessions of focused radiofrequency and ultrasound of the face and neck area. [4] Photographs of the patients were taken and the severity of wrinkles was evaluated by a dermatologist before and after the treatment. The patients were also instructed to rate their satisfaction with the result of the treatment. Results showed that focused radiofrequency and ultrasound to the face and neck area produced a statistically significant reduction in mean wrinkle/sagging scores and were associated with high patient satisfaction scores.

Forty-seven subjects with moderate-to-severe lines on the neck and/or décolletage (lower neckline) were enrolled in a study. [5] The subjects received microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V) followed by calcium hydroxylapatite injections to the skin. It was found that the combination of MFU-V and calcium hydroxylapatite injections effectively improved the appearance of neck and décolletage lines and wrinkles.

Forty-three patients with neck and lower facial laxity were treated with intense focused ultrasound (IFUS). [6] Two independent dermatologists assessed the patients’ level of “sagging” and “volume loss”. Other factors such as patient satisfaction and tolerance were also assessed. Results showed that nine subjects (52.9%) exhibited significant improvement in neck and lower facial laxity following the treatment and reported high satisfaction rates. The treatment was also well tolerated by the patients.

Treatment Options

Ultherapy uses controlled ultrasound energy to boost collagen production in the neck area, thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Skin Laxity

Skin laxity, also known as crepey skin, is characterized by looseness and sagging of the skin. This occurs because the age-related decline in collagen causes the skin to lose its firmness and structure. As a result, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles become more prominent.

By boosting the production of collagen, Ultherapy can help reduce the appearance of skin laxity and achieve a younger skin profile. This procedure uses microfocused ultrasound energy to tighten the skin without the need for a longer recovery time. With decreased skin laxity, the signs of aging become less noticeable.

Twenty-two female patients with moderate-to-severe skin sagging at the jawline and submental region were included in a study. [7] The patients received microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V) and were evaluated before, immediately after, and at 12 and 24 weeks. Several factors such as skin temperature, water loss, skin hydration, skin elasticity, skin thickness, and skin density were also evaluated. Results revealed that MFU-V significantly increased skin elasticity at 12 and 24 weeks after a single treatment. In addition, the treatment was also well tolerated and did not alter the function and physiology of the skin.

A study assessed the efficacy of microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V) in improving skin laxity. [8] Four women between 29 and 36 years who desired to naturally improve the shape of their faces and have visible facial skin sagging were included in the study. MFU-V treatment with Ulthera for one session was performed and the subjects were evaluated after 180 days. Results showed that all subjects had improvements in skin laxity and facial contour. The practitioner and all the patients also reported high satisfaction rates with the treatment.

Twelve female subjects who had skin laxity in the brachial regions (inside the upper arm) and who desired non-surgical intervention were enrolled in a study. [9] The subjects received microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V) treatment with Ulthera followed by injections of calcium hydroxyapatite to the skin. After 6 months, the subjects had significant improvements in skin firmness, skin elasticity, and arm appearance and reported satisfaction with the treatment. Both procedures were well-tolerated.
